Beach Volleyball???

I apologize in advance for those of you who enjoy watching beach volleyball....but come on, does it have to be an Olympic event?!!!

I mean they have a volleyball event, do they have to have a "beach" volleyball event? Is it not the same thing as regular volleyball?

OK so there are some difference...They play the game on sand and they are in very skimpy uniforms, if you can call them that and there are only two players per team. I guess that makes it different enough to have their own event.

Don't get me wrong, I don't hate volleyball I just don't understand why the two different events. I guess it's getting more popular now because the girls are wearing band aids for uniforms and hence the distinction.

Can you tell I'm a little annoyed? Sorry, I just had to vent and I'm sure Josh is getting sick of hearing it from me.

Amen, sister! My mom and I had this identical conversation about 10 times yesterday.

I COMPLETELY AGREE! I thought the "band-aids" was funny! I keep venting to Clint about this. Why in the heck do they have to wear those? The men wear baggy shorts and tank tops. Why not the women? What about the sand? With those uniforms they're likely to get sand places you don't want sand...not to mention the awful back-shots from the camera. I think it is just to get more spectators. Disgusting!!

Amen! And isn't it funny that they put that sport at the very beginning of the Olympics, and make sure they put it on TV too?! It catches all those eyes at the very beginning and then all of America is hooked the rest of the games, wondering what WOW factor is next! I seriously wish I had one of those bodies though! Guess I need to take up beach volleyball ;). Any one have a band aid I can borrow?

Amy, you crack me up. Hey I'll be your partner if you need one. I need one of those bodies too!

I agree with the bandaids. I watched a clip of it yesterday and wondered why they had to wear those?

So this is Kerstina, one more of Josh's Bates cousins. I've never posted on your blog before, so I thought I'd introduce myself again. I don't think I've seen you since your wedding though. That's really bad--can you tell I don't get out much???

I agree with you on the games. It seems that they are inventing more and more events that Americans rule at so that we can one-up everyone else in the world to make them hate us even more.

I do have to say though how awesome it was to watch the men's relay team win the gold medal in swimming and killing the record at the same time. That is what the olympics is about. Go TEAM USA!

As a college volleyball player, I have to comment here. Beach volleyball is a very different game than indoor 6 man volleyball. It's much more of a dramatic difference than singles and doubles tennis. Two man volleyball is very difficult to defend and the sand makes it much tougher to move quickly and jump. The strategies are very different between the two games.

Regarding the "uniforms", many if not all of those players say they prefer them for various reasons (but not so they can show off their bodies). Women's indoor volleyball is also played essentially in a swimsuit. I'm not saying I disagree with your frustrations. I have always thought that women's uniforms should be more modest and I do see how someone could think it's just on TV to draw attention.

To me though, boxing has dominated TV much more than beach volleyball (if you watch all the channels the Olympics is shown on).
